Green algae are characterized by chlorophyll a and b, although a few also contain other pigments, especially xanthophylls like lutein, violaxanthine, neoxanthine, and enterxanthine.
Because of the presence of these pigments, the majority of these algae are green, generally a good, first characteristic by which to identify the Chlorophyta.
