Galapagos Species Checklist

Marine mollusks

Molluscs are a large group of animals presenting bilateral symmetry (sometimes secondary), with soft unsegmented bodies which in most species are protected by a shell.
Although marine mollusks represent one of the best studied and largest group of marine invertebrates it is still not known for the majority of species whether these are native to the archipelago or if they were introduced (see below: origin of the taxa included in this checklist).

This checklist only includes the marine species, checkout the terrestrial gastropods as well.

Names of taxa included: 1162 total (939 accepted, 31 unidentified taxon, 183 doubtful, 1 preliminary identification, 6 problematic, 2 new to science), 35 rejected.

Origin of the taxa included: 157 endemic, 82 indigenous, 4 questionable endemic.

Adding up the number of species in each category will not always equal the total number indicated. Some species have insufficient data to be categorized while others (e.g., category eradicated) will not be included in the total.
