True slime molds (plasmodial, dictyostelid and protostelid)
The phylum Myxomycota includes the plasmodial or acellular slime molds. Previously believed to be fungi, slime molds are a diverse group of heterotrophic amoeboid organisms that feed on organic matter.
Slime molds are known to be quite diverse in terrestrial habitats rich in detritus. They are best studied in temperate areas of the Northern Hemisphere, thus tropical slime molds remain poorly known.
In Galapagos, only a single species has been reported.
