Charles Darwin Foundation Galapagos Species Checklist

Beetles

Beetles are the group of insects with the largest number of known species. They can be found in almost all habitats; they often feed on plants and fungi, break down organic debris, or feed on other invertebrates.
Some species are preyed upon by other animals like birds and mammals.

The Galapagos beetle fauna is now known to contain 56 families, 297 genera, and 486 species.
The relationship of beetle diversity increases with island area, elevation, and ecological complexity, but this correlation has not been observed with island age.
The taxonomic composition of the total beetle fauna is probably now more than 95% sampled, and only a few species remain to be named. This provides excellent opportunities for the study of the life cycles and ecology of the Galapagos beetles, and for comparisons with the continental beetle fauna.
