Charles Darwin Foundation Galapagos Species Checklist

True bugs - Leafhoppers, planthoppers, aphids and scale insects.

The Hemiptera are characterized by their common arrangement of sucking mouthparts.
They derived their name from the Greek hemi (“half”) and pteron (“wing”), referring to the forewings of many species, which are hardened near the base, but membranous at the tip. These wings are termed hemelytra (singular: hemelytron), in comparison with the completely hardened outer wings (elytra) of the beetles.
