Ascomycetes are fungi that reproduce by forming spores within a sac-like structure, the ascus. The majority of ascomycetes are small, inconspicuous fungi (yeasts or cup fungi), but a few macro-fungi are also included in this group (truffles, morels, etc.). A large part of the ascomycetes are typically lichenized.
This checklist of known non-lichenized ascomycetes from the Galapagos Islands is currently based on the sparse literature records available and a few recent field surveys on the central island of Santa Cruz.
These few records are by no means comprehensive and it is estimated that the current list represents less than 80% of the diversity of Galapagos Ascomycota.
