Introduction:
The Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands (CDF) is an international non-profit research organization dedicated to providing scientific research, technical assistance and information to ensure conservation success in Galapagos. The CDF has responsibilities established by law and by agreement to provide the Government of Ecuador with advice to help ensure the conservation of Galapagos.
The CDF promotes for the conservation of Galapagos based on solid principles of ecosystem management. This requires cultivating a holistic understanding of the complex and dynamic Galapagos ecosystem. People are a vital part of this ecosystem and building long-term options for the inhabitants of Galapagos is critical for the effective management in the islands.
CDF's mission is:
To provide knowledge and assistance through scientific research and complementary action to ensure the conservation of the environment and biodiversity in the Galapagos Archipelago.
Objective:
This position will be responsible for the development, implementation and administration of a centralized data system at the Charles Darwin Foundation. S/he will manage both the general and specific data of the Charles Darwin Research Station Scientists. S/he will integrate, visualize and analyze spatial and temporal scientific data with tools such as geographic information systems (GIS).
Responsibilities:
- Create a central database integrating different types of CDF data.
- Create policies and procedures to centrally manage data for the Charles Darwin Foundation that are compatible with system used by Galapagos National Park Service.
- Migrate and edit data to new database format.
- Improve accessibility of the data via the inter and intranet.
- Generate reports, data summaries and analysis of information from database.
- Train scientific staff in the use of databases and GIS.
- Manage, maintain and safeguard scientific data of the CDF.
- A Master degree in Database management
- Have knowledge of development of databases using software such as ACCESS, MsSQL server 2000. Additional experience in Visual BASIC programming is also sought.
- Experience in administering databases, including establishing processes and controls.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience in processing spatial and temporal data using GIS.
- Advanced knowledge of the following or similar spatial science software: Arc/Info, Arc View, Arc Gis, Erdas etc.
- Quantitative abilities related to design of statistical studies, analysis and synthesis of data.Capacity to analyze information to detect patterns, correlations, causes and effects.
- Proficiency in English and Spanish (oral and written).
- Capabilities in project management, proposal writing, budgeting. Perform other administrative tasks.
- Experience managing people with demonstrated high level communication skills.
- Preferred
- Intermediate qualifications and understanding of biology.
- Experience working in applied quantitative and statistical biology.
This is a long term position in the CDF. The initial period of the contract is for two years renewable according to availability of funds. The wage range for this position is $26.000 to $28.000 per year. The position is based on Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island - Galapagos. Benefits include private health insurance and 22 days of annual leave.
