Chapter 10
Restoring the natural balance
The success of the Tortoise Rearing program is measured by the survival and reproduction of captive bred tortoises in the wild.
The Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station restore the habitat of the giant tortoise by:
- Controlling, and removing, introduced species who prey on, and compete with the repatriated tortoises
- Fencing sensitive areas to allow damaged vegetation to recover
- Monitoring the survival and reproduction of the tortoises in their new environment.
