The herbarium

International Index Herbariorum Code: CDS

working in the CDRS herbariumThe Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) Herbarium was established in 1964. It maintains the most complete and largest collection of vascular and non vascular plant specimens from Galapagos. The herbarium’s emphases are endemic and endangered species, and species that have been introduced to the archipelago. Another priority is species whose status as native or introduced is doubtful.

Currently the herbarium holds approximately 22,500 collections:

  • 16,500 vascular plants
  • 4,500 lichens
  • 800 bryophytes
  • 600 algae
  • 100 fungi

An on-site database contains details of the entire collection.

The herbarium also houses collections of pollen, seeds, wood, bark, flowers, fruits, and algae. Some of these are dried specimens; others are preserved in alcohol.
