CDRS Herbarium collections

Part of the wood collection in the CDRS Herbarium

The Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) Herbarium was established in 1964. It maintains the most complete and largest collection of vascular and non vascular plant specimens from Galapagos. The herbarium’s emphases are endemic and endangered species and species that have been introduced to the archipelago. Another priority is species whose status as native or introduced is doubtful.

In 2006, the herbarium contains approximately 22,500 collections:

  • 16,500 vascular plants (1359 taxa total, 238 endemics, 376 natives, 745 introduced)
  • 4,500 lichens
  • 800 bryophytes
  • 600 algae
  • 100 fungi

Details of all these specimens are held in the on-site database.

The herbarium contains several auxiliary collections such as a pollen, seeds, wood, bark, flowers, fruits, and algae. Some of these collections are dry specimens, while others are preserved in alcohol.
