Museum

The CDRS Museum has served, since its creation, as a repository for specimens collected by our staff and by visiting scientists. It contains representative collections of vertebrates and vertebrates of the Archipelago. Collections were increased in 1999, especially in the area of invertebrates. This year the insect collection of the Station was registered in the Book of Collections of Insects and Arachnids of Latin America, an important recognition of the work carried out by the CDF in Galapagos. Currently work is being done to design a database for cataloguing, identifying, and conserving the numerous specimens that are periodically added to the Museum.

Invertebrate Museum

Mounted insects from invert museum. In 2000, the CDRS invertebrate collection was recognized and included in the list of entomological collections of Central and South America. This collection is essential to identify new species and pests quickly and to list Galapagos species as endemic, native, or introduced. The CDRS invertebrates scientists provide technical assistance for SICGAL, the Galapagos quarantine and control system, identifying any new insects or other invertebrates found in produce that is imported to Galapagos. All new discoveries are added to the reference collection in the Museum.
