Godfrey Merlen

General Assembly Member

Godfrey has lived in the Galapagos islands for 50 years. He has a through, and mostly detailed, knowledge of almost all the Islands,
He has written three books, Guide to fishes, Guide to Marine Mammals, and the story of the tortoise conservation up to 2000 (written for CDF).

Merlen has been an author (several as principal author) of about 25 peer review papers (from Fish eating snakes to Recovery of vegetation after the1968 Caldera of Fernandina and Effects of the 1982 Niño.
He has worked with several Not for profit organization (WildAid, Sea Shepherd)

For 8 years he worked directly with the Galapagos National Park Service as an assessor, This was at the time of approval of the Special Law for Galapagos and its Marine reserve and much time was spent in aerial surveys archipelago wide to establish order in the new Marine Reserve,

He also established the fumigation of all aircraft flying to the Galapagos Islands to help prevent the arrival of West Nile Virus and Avian Malaria,

Today he works with conservation of Penguins and is the independent assessor in the Committee of FEIG (Ecuadorian Foundation for control of Invasive species)
