César Viteri

Co-Principal Investigator

César is an economist by training, obtained his PhD in resource economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (USA); and has been involved with coastal marine resource management in Galapagos for more than 20 years. Cesar is an expert on artisanal fisheries governance and management, fisheries value chain, and fisheries innovation. His research and subsequent publication in 2002 on the analysis of compliance with fishing regulations in Galapagos was one of the pioneering works to understand from the social sciences the behavior of those engaged in artisanal fisheries. Viteri has also studied complex issues in the archipelago, such as agricultural production in the islands and its relationship to food demand and the problem of invasive species. His research has also addressed issues of nature-based tourism management by analyzing the willingness to pay of tourists and how they are influenced by the conservation policies of the archipelago. César has worked as a professor at universities in the United States of America and Ecuador.  He collaborates since 2019 in the Interdisciplinary Fisheries Project of the Charles Darwin Foundation.
