Deeper bodied than other snappers. Back dark greenish brown to brown, fading to lighter shades of copper, reddish brown or maroon sides and belly. Reaches length of at least 80cm
Habitat: Nocturnal predators; Adults are rarely seen in waters less than 15m; open waters near dropp-offs or deep water reefs. Small juveniles are most often seen among brown algaes.
