The Charles Darwin Foundation joins the Global Rewilding Alliance

We are excited to announce that the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) is now a member of the Global Rewilding Alliance, an international network of over 170 organizations restoring nature around the world. Together, we believe that rewilding is one of the most powerful paths forward to tackle biodiversity loss, climate change, and the global environmental crisis.

For more than 65 years, CDF has grounded its work in rigorous science and deep commitment to conservation in the Galápagos Islands. From wildlife monitoring to habitat restoration, from policy advice to community engagement — our efforts center on restoring natural systems so they thrive. Joining the Global Rewilding Alliance now lets us share what we’ve learned, collaborate with new partners, and scale up our impact.

Rewilding in action in Galápagos

The Floreana Ecological Restoration Project is one of the most ambitious island-scale rewilding initiatives in the Galápagos. It is led by the Galápagos National Park Directorate and the Agency for Biosecurity of Galápagos (ABG), with Fundación Jocotoco, Island Conservation, and the Charles Darwin Foundation acting as co-executors, working closely with the local Floreana community and other partners. The initiative seeks to:

  • Remove invasive species that threaten native biodiversity.
  • Restore habitats that can sustain both wildlife and the people of Floreana Island
  • Reintroduce 12 extirpated species, including the Floreana mockingbird and giant tortoise.

The initiative embodies the principles of rewilding: reviving lost species, restoring ecological processes, and demonstrating how human and natural communities can thrive together.

By joining the Global Rewilding Alliance, we reaffirm our role as both a science partner in Galápagos and a committed ally in a worldwide movement to give nature the space and support it needs to recover.
