Marine Genomics Technician - Deep-ocean and exploration and conservation program

Kevin Crespin is a marine biologist of the Santa Elena Peninsula State University (UPSE), Ecuador. His professional experience has focused on the application of molecular biology, genomics, and environmental monitoring tools for the research and conservation of marine ecosystems. He has participated in projects related to phytoplankton cultivation, molecular identification of microalgae, and bioprospecting.

He also joined the Genetic Code for Galapagos project (USFQ-GSC-ABG), where he contributed to sample processing for DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and sequencing using Oxford Nanopore technology. He led the development of a biofertilizer based on native microalgae as a sustainable alternative for agriculture and worked as a laboratory technician at INOCAR–SHOIAR, participating in the establishment of a baseline for microplastic abundance using protocols harmonized with the REMARCO Network and with support from the IAEA.

Currently, he works as a marine genomics technician in the Deep Oceans Program of the Charles Darwin Foundation, where he promotes the implementation of genomic tools to strengthen the study and conservation of deep marine biodiversity in the Galapagos.

Deep-ocean Exploration & Conservation

The Eastern Tropical Pacific conceals extraordinary, vast deep-ocean ecosystems, plunging from oceanic islands to depths of 3,800 meter, most of which remain largely unexplored, presenting real challenges for effective protection and management. Despite their significance, these ecosystems are poorly understood and subject to persistent threats, including overfishing, climate change, pollution, and the prospect for deep-sea mining.
