A scientific delegation from the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galapagos Islands participated in the 12th annual meeting of the Commission of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO), which took place in Manta, Ecuador, between 29 January – 2 February 2024.

The Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) is pleased to unveil the Galapagos Introduced Species Dashboard, the first open-access digital repository of information about species introduced to the Galapagos Islands.

The deep ocean of the Eastern Tropical Pacific hosts unique ecosystems, including seamounts, deep reefs, and abyssal habitats. These environments support remarkable biodiversity, regulate climate, and connect migratory species. Scientific research is essential to discover new species, understand ecological processes, and strengthen conservation against growing environmental threats.

The Galapagos Rail (Laterallus spilonota) has been confirmed on Floreana Island for the first time in 190 years. This follows a 2023 eradication campaign that removed most invasive cats and rats, likely aiding its survival. Researchers will conduct genetic testing to determine if the species recolonized or persisted undetected.

The Deep Ocean Alliance brings together institutions from Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador to strengthen deep-ocean science and marine conservation in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Through scientific expeditions, regional collaboration, and technological innovation, the Alliance is improving understanding of deep-sea biodiversity and supporting evidence-based protection of interconnected marine ecosystems.
